Liberian Conservationist wants students specialize in Conservation

Society for the Conservation of Nature of Liberia (SCNL) Executive Director Michael F. Garbo has admonished young Liberian students to take interest in the science area especially biodiversity conservation.

Addressing students of the Isaac A. David Memorial High school on Friday May 10, 2019, Mr. Garbo said he believes students who are still in primary or secondary school can make a big difference in biodiversity conservation in Liberia if they begin to interest in areas like general forestry and environmental science.

Reflecting on his school days, Mr. Garbo, a graduate of the Forestry Department at University of Liberia told the students that he developed interest  in conservation ever since as student. He also encouraged the students to be studious and be  an example like him.

It called on Friday May 10, 2019 students of the Isaac A. David Memorial School visited   the Head office of the Society for the Conservation of Nature of Liberia (SCNL) in Monrovia to learn about the work of the organization towards nature.

The students who were led two science teachers from the Isaac A. David School, were drawn from Grade 6th A and B science classes respectively. Earlier during the one day visit SCNL’s Science Coordinator, Jerry C. Garteh show the students various species of animals can be found in the Liberian forest.  He also used the occasion to explain the importance of conservation adding forest and animal will go extinct if they are not conserved by  present generation.

Mr. Garteh presentation also includes the different kinds of biodiversity conservation works SCNL has been doing since its establishment in 1986.

Making specific reference to research work Garteh informed the students, SCNL continues to work and study various species of birds in Liberia.

The visit at the same time afforded the students to interact with officials of SCNL about their work.

Society for the Conservation of Nature of Liberia was established in 1986 and it is currently the only national biodiversity conservation group in Liberia. SCNL has advocated and educated the Liberian populace on the importance of conserving biodiversity in Liberia.
