Voters in Montserrado County are expressing frustration over five United States dollars, charged by National Elections Commission (NEC) for replacement of lost voter cards, say the fee will serve as a ‘recipe’ for low voter turnout during the June 8 by-elections
The National Elections Commission says its decision to request $5.00 United States dollars for the replacement of lost voter cards is consistent with the 1986 election law.
NEC Communication Director Henry Flomo told reporters on Monday that the NEC has been provided assistance to Liberians during past electoral period on the replacement of lost voter cards.
According to him, the commission has deemed it necessary to act in conformity with the law due to the financial constraint facing the entity.
Meanwhile in the wake of the decision to request 5 United States Dollars for the replacement of lost voter card from Liberians, Some Liberians have frowned at the decision in the midst of economic constrains.
Some angry Liberians told Liberia Public Radio that the exercise leading to the replacement of the lost cards is too tedious.
They want the NEC to abolish such decision in order to avoid the already low voter appetite in Montserrado County.
