The President of the Nimba Disable community has called on the Government of Liberia to prioritize the education of members of the disable community of the county.

According to Mr. D. Abestine Tozay, it is the government’s responsibility to educate her citizens; emphasizing that person living with disability should enjoy equal right.

Making his argument, Tozay cited Article 24 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of persons living with disability that  mandates every member government to promote education for persons living with disability.

He added that the United Nations convention has not been implemented by past governments including the current administration of President George Manneh Weah.

He explained that school facilities housing physically challenged people  are not accessible by members, noting that such practice is a violation of their rights as humans.

The Nimba Disable community President argued that if the Liberian government is promoting free basics and primary education, similar support should be given to the schools of the blind operating in the country.

He meanwhile lauded the Christian Association of the blind for training offered to the disable in Nimba on the usage of the white cane.

Tozay said, although the venture is void of governments intervention, it is helping to give a place to persons living with disability in the larger society.

The Nimba Disable President then called on the Ministry of Education to institute programs that will educate person with disability and make them useful in the Liberian society.

The Ministry of Education is yet to give funding to visually impaired people in Liberia in the current fiscal year as a result many facilities for the blind community in Liberia has not been able to fully function.
