In helping to develop a web-based digital platform on youth employability and empowerment, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, recently launched a component of the Liberia Youth Employability and Empowerment Project (LYEEP) called Hackathon.
Speaking to a cross section of youth at the German Embassy in Oldest Congo Town during the lunching ceremony, MoYS Boss D. Zoegar Wilson described the Hackathon as a critical milestone for the enhancement of youth development and employability.
Minister Wilson said the development of a web-based digital platform on youth employability and empowerment is cardinal to the growth and development of young people in the country.
He noted that in this age where knowledge is power and information is key to the acquisition of it, hackathon as a platform will enhance information dissemination on employability and empowerment and also serve as a repository for data and resources focused on promoting better educational and economic opportunities for Liberian youth.
The Youth and Sports Minister expressed his excitement for the web-based digital platform, adding that the module of the program will be developed and driven by the young people themselves.
Minister Wilson encouraged young people to put in their best because they were selected with the objective of generating the most innovative design and maintenance of the platform.
The MoYS Boss lauded the World Bank through its country Manager in Liberia, Dr. Khwima Nthara, leaders and members of youth and student groups, participants of the Hackathon and the LYEEP team for the level of work done to bring the program into reality.
Under the LYEEP program, the World Bank will support the Liberian Government by developing a web-based digital platform on youth employability and empowerment as well as providing technical assistance for stakeholder engagement on this agenda.
The development of the platform is supported by a grant from the World Bank’s Rapid Social Response (RSR) with the aim of promoting useful and timely information to the youth that will facilitate their active participation in the labor market.
Employability remains a challenge for many young people who are not permanently employed despite having the required qualification and skills.
