Liberia: Dismissal awaits government officials for bypassing health protocols

Liberia’s Information Minister Lenn Eugene Nagbe said as part of measures to slow the spread of the Corona virus in Liberia, President George Weah has warned officials of Government, who will breach various health protocols will be fire or be penalized by the law.

Min. Nagbe disclosed that in a Special Emergency Meeting with the Special Presidential Advisory Committee on Corona virus on Thursday, the President mandated that all officials of government abide by various health protocols or risk being sacked.

“The President has mandated that all officials of government including Liberians and foreign partners to 100℅ comply with all of the health protocols that have been layout,” Minister Nagbe said.

He added that any official of government who breach the Health measures will be arrested and dismissed by the President.

 The Information Minister disclosed during the press conference that health authorities have been mandated to enforce the presidential direction.

He also warns against freedom of speech that will mislead the public in the midst of the deadly Corona virus outbreak, noting that the law of Liberia will prosecute those who mislead the public.

Also speaking, Finance Minister Samuel D. Tweh disclosed that World Bank has committed US$15 million to help the government of Liberia to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the Finance Minister, US$7.5 million will come through the World Bank for the emergency response commitment.

He said US$6 million will come from the World Bank based on what he referred to as ‘contingency’ in the coming days.

The Minister also disclosed that the International Monetary Fund has made available US$50 billion globally for countries affected by the virus while the government is making every effort to engage relevant authorities to make a request because the virus will have a trickle-down effect on the economy.

Minister Tweh also said the Liberian government has committed US$500,000 to help fight the virus, stressing that the government of Liberia is ensuring to hold every stakeholder accountable for every cent spent to avoid the Ebola scenario.

He then lauded the international partners including the World Bank and USAID for supporting Liberia in the fight against the corona virus, noting that the extra-ordinary coordination from the country and its partners have paved the way for the progress made so far in the fight against the deadly corona virus.
