Amid Covid-19, FUN, AJWS empower farmers in two Counties

Since the coronavirus surfaced in Liberia on March 16, 2020, government and its partners, local and international organizations, religious institutions and ordinary Liberians have been contributing to halt the further spread of the virus through the provision of rice, anti-COVID-19 materials including detergents, sanitizers, buckets and face-masks among others. 

The Government and all other organizations contributing to fight against COVID-19 are also using awareness and other innovative means through risks communication method to engender behavior change among a heavily gullible population.

In the face of this, the Farmer Union Network of Liberia has taken the  COVID-19 fight to another level by empowering farmers with assorted agricultural materials to increase their yield.

These agriculture products include huge consignment of corn, cucumber seed alongside withNPK fertilizers.

The items were presented by FUN president, Madam Josephine Francis to the farmers through their various cooperatives, the Deshie Rubber Farmer Union, Kwageh Farmer Cooperative and Kingsville #7 women Cooperative.

The three farmers Cooperatives are located in Kingsville #7, Lower Montserrado County and Lonfay and Peter towns in upper Margibi County.

Presenting the seeds and fertilizers to the farmers Madam Francis said funding for the items was made possible by the American Jewish  World Service (AJWs).

She said because Montserrado and Margibi Counties are being considered epicenter for the coronavirus the AJWS has asked FUN to give the seeds and fertilizers to farmers in the two counties to enable them increase their production for consumption and commercial purposes.

Madam Francis encouraged the beneficiaries to invest more in agriculture to avoid food shortage in this time of health crisis.

She reminded the farmers that biggest rice producing Countries are challenged and can no more export rice to Country like Liberia due to the Global Pandemic.

She noted that the Population of Liberia now depends on the agricultural sector to intervene in any future food crisis.

Madam Francis said that the politicans were providing buckets and other anti covid-19 material while FUN was investing in the agricultural sector.

The beneficiaries of the gesture welcomed the intervention and promised that the seedlings will be used to cultivate new farmland for planting to increase their production.

FUN is the first  agriculture organization to empower farmers to increase their production as part of the COVID-19 fight.
