A female lawmaker of Lofa County Mariamu Fofana has welcomed the appointment of more women on the board of commissioners of the National Election Commission (NEC) describing it as a “good thing” for Liberia.
Speaking to legislative reporters on Tuesday June 16, 2020 at her capitol building office, the Lofa lawmaker noted that the appointment of four women to NEC’s board of commissioners is historic and record breaking by the George Weah led administration.
Seven commissioners makeup of the board of the National Elections Commission, and four of the seven are females: Chairman-designate Davidetta Browne Lassana, co-chair-designate Teplah Reeves, and commissioners Ernestine Morgan-Awar and Josephine Kou Gaye.
Representative Fofana, an advocate for women participation in national leadership, noted that President Weah’s recent appointment of four women translates into a ‘transparent’ election commission.
On Monday June 15, 2020, President George Weah appointed Davidetta Browne Lansanah was earlier nominated as co-chairman of the National Election Commission.
Commissioner Lansanah, when confirmed by the Liberian Senate, will replace Cllr Jerome Korkoyah whose tenure expired in March of this year, according to the Executive Mansion.
Her appointment followed the rejection of Cllr. Ndubuisi Nwabudike over his controversial citizenship.
Ndubuisi Nwabudike whose both parents come from Nigeria claimed he was a naturalized Liberian since 1982 but could not prove this by documentation during his confirmation by the Liberian senate.
President also appointed Cllr. Tepleh Reeves as co-chairman of the commission.
Both nominations are to go through confirmation hearing by the Liberian Senate where applicable.
