Domestic violence has increased since the outbreak of COVID-19

Nimba County Ministry of Gender and Children Social Protection coordinator has alarmed over increase domestic violence and Persistence nonsupport in the county over the period of five (5) months.

Making the disclosure to reporters at her office in Sanniquellie on Tuesday June 17, 2020, Mrs. Yah Belleh Suah said, her office recorded about 39 rape cases from January to May 30, 2020 with Sanniquellie Mah and Tappita recording the highest number of rape cases.

Madam Suah explained that among the six statutory districts in Nimba, Gbehlay Geh and Saclepea reported four rape cases each with Yarwin Mensonnoh only reporting persistence nonsupport case, which her office was able to handle.

The County Gender narrated that 13 rape cases were reported for the month of May alone in the county.

 She lamented that most of the rape victims were between the ages of 6 to 15 years.

She further that explained that some of the allege perpetrators where arrested while some of them escaped and have not been seen.

Madam Suah said that there are eight rape cases currently before the Liberia National police Nimba Detachment that the perpetrators are on the run as the police is still in search of them.

She asserted that most of the victims are currently at the safe home in Sanniquellie, while some have been reunited with their families.

At the same time, the Nimba County Gender Coordinator is recommending that a survey be conducted in the 15 counties of Liberia to establish the actual cause of statutory rape across the country.  

Since the outbreak of the Coronavirus in March experts say domestic violence has since increase especially during the lockdown period.
