Natural Disaster Victimizes 33,750 Households in Liberia

A survey conducted by the National Disaster Response Team has revealed that 33,750 households have been affected by natural disaster throughout the country.

Jefferson Koijee, the Mayor of Monrovia City stated that based on this back ground, government has put in place a mechanism aimed at addressing some of the problems affect them.

Mayor Koijee made the statement recently  when the national disaster response team distributed 180 United States Dollars to each of 217 households, mattresses, bags of rice and vegetable oil to the erosion victims in the Borough of New Kru Town on the Bushrod Island.

According to him, President George Weah is concern about the disaster that affected people and wants an urgent response to ease their sufferings.

He revealed that there are three categories because some of affected people will be given bindle of zinc to re-roof their houses along with relief food.

The Monrovia City Mayor maintained some of victims will also receive mosquito nets and funds to establish micro business because it is one of the means through which they can accelerate their return to normalcy.

He pinpointed that President Weah is deeply sad about the erosion and other disaster that have affected the people and caused displacement, adding that government will not sit and allow her people to suffer despite the prevailing economic situation in the country.

He assured the sea erosion victims of government’s continuous support in restoring their livelihood and homes.

Meanwhile, the Executive Director of the National Disaster Management Agency, Henry Williams, assured all those captured in the survey conducted will benefit from the goodwill of the president.

Representative Sebo cautioned Liberian politicians against using the issue of the victims of the sea erosion as a means to gain political favor by encouraging them to demonstrate against the government.

According to the Lawmaker, government is lobbying with international partners in order to block the sea as it is done behind the D Tweh High School and some parts of Buchanan, in Grand Bass County.

He added that the people of the district are matured and called on others to follow the good example of the president.

Representative Sebo disclosed that more trucks load of rice for distribution in the Borough of New Kru Tow.

As the program was unfolding, hundreds of the victims were jubilating after receiving message in their cell phone from Ecobank about 180 United States Dollars into their electronic wallet.

Others who have not received money in their phones were assured that government is working around the clock purposely to ensure that their monies are transferred.

Shortly after the indoor program, Representative Sebo led an array of officials of government including Finance and Development Planning Minister Samuel Tweah, Presidential Affairs Minister Nathaniel McGill and Montserrado County District Seven Representative Solomon George, to have a view on the level destruction done by the sea erosion.

Others who accompanied the officials of government were senior staffs and technicians from the Ministry of land and Mines, the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Disaster Management Agency among others

As they were walking, hundreds of people lined up both sides of the road sheering for them as they were walking from the New Kru Town Hall to the areas affected by the sea erosion

 The program was graced Samuel Tweah, the Minister Finance and Development Planning , Nathaniel McGill, the Minister of State for Presidential Affairs; Representative  Dixon Sebo among others.
