Ahead of the conduct of the Coalition for Democratic Change July 24, 2020 primary in Margibi County and the December 8, 2020 midterm senatorial election, a member of the National Patriotic Party (NPP), Ambassador A. Sieh Thomas has backed off from the primary and the election.
It can be recalled that while in the United States of America, Amb. Thomas on a local radio station (Radio Margibi) declared his intention to contest the upcoming senatorial election.
Days following his public declaration, members of the National Patriotic Party (NPP) Margibi Chapter petitioned the Ambassador and introduced him to executive members of the Party during its County convention held in Kakata as their favorable candidate for the midterm election.
Amb. Thomas at a major press conference in Kakata recently, announced that he would not participate in the primary and the senatorial election.
Mr. Thomas explained that his decision to withdraw from the process is not based on pressure from anyone but because he thinks he has not done enough work to contest especially with the result from consultations he conducted.
“We fear no fall, there is no pressure that is being exerted upon us and no one has ask us not to contest the primary, we are simply leaving the primary because we think based on consultation we have not done enough work to contest the senatorial election” he noted.
He said this will afford him more opportunity to ensure that when he is contesting in the next election he will have the kind of result that is so desire.
The Ambassador asserted that he has gone through a lot of consultations with stakeholders and the citizens, but the results he has received from the various districts he has come to the conclusion that he will need extra time to work and make sure that he be able to stand with the people of Margibi in the next election (2023).
He said it will be a political suicide in the shortest possible time to join in such an election giving the nature of the election and the kind of consultation he had noting that he wants to give himself an extra time to work.
Speaking further, Mr. Thomas revealed that he has been able to establish a “movement” (the Movement for Ambassador Sieh Thomas) for his intent and it has worked so hard and diligently but he thinks it is not sufficient when it comes to participating in the upcoming election.
“It is with heavy heart that the movement will work and disengage from contesting the primary of the Coalition for Democratic Change” he narrates.
He also said the movement will still attend to the less-privileged people and those projects it intended to undertake and as well work with the people as if to say today was election.
Ambassador Thomas: “For us 2023 is not too far, it is just day after tomorrow so we have begun to work and we will not seize to work, we will continue to engage our stakeholder, we will continue to engage our people do those services that we need to do to impact the lives of our people”.
When asked if he will support whoever the Coalition for Democratic Change fuels in the upcoming election in Margibi, Ambassador Thomas says he is not aware if the Party has come up with any candidate in the County.
Mr. Thomas however could not say whether he will support or not whoever the Coalition put out in the upcoming election, but said until he sees what comes about when it relates to would-be candidate for the Coalition he cannot say he is giving support to any party or person at any time.
NPP endorsement
In a related development, the National Patriotic Party Margibi chapter has endorsed the candidacy of Margibi electoral district #2 Representative Ivar K. Jones.
The County Chairman of the NPP in Margibi, Sam M. Zor speaking to the media at the end of an acquaintance meeting on Monday July 20, 2020 said their decision is predicated upon the recent decision of their favored Candidate, Amb. A. Sieh Thomas to withdraw from the process.
He indicated that the NPP does not have a candidate to put forth for the Coalition primary as such it is incumbent upon the Party to take it position. “We the NPP we stand ready and prepare to move the party forward and the Coalition forward; thank you!” he added.
Earlier, the Liberia People Democratic Party (LPDP) headed by the County Superintendent Jerry Varnie endorsed the candidacy of Hon. Jones on grounds that the Party does not have a candidate to put forth for the 2020 senatorial election.
Hon. Ivar K. Jones for his part lauded the two Political Parties for the endorsement and the confidence reposed in him to contest on the ticket of the Coalition.
Rep. Jones said he has not come to participate in the senatorial election but to win the process. He then described the pending Coalition’s primary as a way of rejuvenating the winning spirit of the party in 2017 crossing it over to the upcoming election.
