The deadly covid19 pandemic may have slowed the economy and imposed hardship on Liberia; but one thing it cannot take away is the joy of celebrating July 26, Independence Day 2020, even if it meant doing so in the simplest way possible.
This assurance for commemorating Liberia is 173rd Independence Anniversary, in a simple but meaningful way, was further boosted by the First Lady, Clar Marie Weah’s humanitarian intervention barely a few days to July 26.
On Friday, July 24, 2020, Mrs. Weah provided five hundred bags of rice, 25kg each, 250 cartoons of canned-kidney beans along with huge bags of clothing and masks to the West-Point Community to benefit five hundred families.
As usual, Liberians celebrate Independence Day elaborately, hosting parties, sporting events among other outdoor and indoor activities events. But due to the covid19 pandemic, all celebrations of such have been ruled out.
This year’s Independence Day is expected to be observed in a more moderate manner with families going to church, mosques or other worship centers and then back home to prepare delicious meals, ensuring the children are happy among other things.
During the presentation of the items to the local authorities at the West-Point Town Hall, the First Lady’s Chief of Office Staff said Mrs. Weah understood the challenges they were going through and would always identify with them.
Madam Gaelle Mediem also conveyed the First Lady’s caution on remaining adherent to the anti-covid19 health protocols by always washing their hands, wearing masks and observing a social distance.
According to her, the Liberian First Lady was troubled by the rising wave of sexual gender based violence, especially rape, in the country and wanted everyone to work collectively, while playing their respective roles to end the menace.
For their part, resident of West-Point Township, including the women group, commended Mrs. Weah for identifying with them at such a crucial time when they needed it the most as they prepare to observe the July 26 Holiday.
Also speaking, the township Commissioner, Honorable Wea, expressed profound gratitude to the First Lady for the gesture, stressing that her impactful work to improve the lives of the underprivileged people has distinguished her from previous First Ladies.
Phebe, C. B. Dunbar and Government Leprosy Home Benefit
While residents of West-point were heaving a sigh of relief, so too were health workers and patients alike at two of central Liberia’s largest hospitals along with lepers at the government Leprosy Rehabilitation Center in Bong County.
The First Lady dispatched a huge consignment including nearly two hundred bags of rice (25kg each) and cartoons of canned-kidney beans along with surgical masks, electronic thermometers and detergents.
These supplies, according to a release from the First Lady’s Office, were not only intended to put smiles on the faces of the hardworking health workers and ailing patients but to also enhance their efforts in curbing the spread of covid19.
