Human-wildlife conflict is common in Cape Mount

Report from Barka town, Garwula District, Grand Cape Mount County says an angry bush-cow has killed man believed to be in his late 50s Lamie Sheriff after it was shot by a group of hunters but didn’t die.

The incident occurred on Saturday October 10,2020 in the town mentioned in Barka town.

According to eyewitness account, the deceased and his wife were on their way to their usual farming activities but he left behind to check on his trap while his wife continue the journey.

Our correspondent quotes an eyewitness in the area as saying, the bush cows were two, the hunters managed to kill one, and other did not die.

The wounded animal then went behind the farm kitchen of the deceased after escaping death unknown to the hunters.

Our correspondent further says, when the victim wife entered the farm kitchen, the angry cow also followed her in the kitchen began fighting her and wounded her severely.

 Report said in an attempt to rescue his wife from the bush-cow, the hunter was terribly hit in the stomach and instantly killed.

Lamie Sheriff wife was also seriously wounded by the animal after he was killed

The wife of the deceased has been transferred to Monrovia to attend further medical treatment and she is said to be on Critical list.

 Human-wildlife conflict in Cape

These bush cows have been entering in town disturbing residents of the County where human-wildlife conflict is common.

Conservationists in say farmers and local people around protected areas especially Grand Cape Mount County many of the wildlife habitats have been destroyed due to farming activities.

This is not the first time for animal to come in conflict with the local people in Cape Mount in 2018, an elephant killed another hunter in the village called Fulah Camp near Gbarpolu County area the Gola forest National Park.  

Some villagers have even threaten to gun down any wild animal they encounter in their village eating their crops.

The Liberia Forestry Development Authority, the government arm responsible for forest issues is yet to make any formal comment.
