Liberia: Bea Mountain concession Recounts development in Grand Cape Mount

Bea Mountain says it has started implementing MOU sign with concession area.

Kinjor, Grand Cape Mount- One of Liberia’s major mining concessions, Bea Mountain says it has began implementing Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) sign with locals in its area of operation.

All previous concerns regarding the well fare of employees and dependents  are at the same time been corrected.

The Superintendent of Community Relations for Bea Mountain, Henry Vincent said the company has recommitted to the development of Kinjor.

Henry Vincent highlighted several completed and ongoing projects by the mining company in that part of the country.

According to him, the company has installed over one hundred pieces of streets lights and expected to increase the number soon.

He pointed such was occasioned following talks that were held by the President, when he visited Kinjor during last year’s special senatorial election camping.

“During the campaign of the President he told the management of Bea Mountain that they needed to provide streets lights for the community.” he said.

Vincent who outlined the gains made by Bea Mountain said the construction of technical and secondary high school is ongoing with aimed to benefit the children of employee’s children and community dwellers.

School construction

He said over US$200,000 will be used for the construction of the technical school, noting that Bea Mountain is not only concern about mining activities, but the well-being of the citizens.

The Head of Community claimed as part of President Weah last visit the construction of Kinjor road was raised as such the company has started working on the road connectivity.

He named the construction of over 300 housing units, mosque, church, school, clinic amongst others as part of the adherence to the MOU signed.

“After the protest we decided to draw a MOU so all of what is in it we are doing.” He emphasize. 

The company, according to him has employed more Liberians, something while using himself as an example for climbing the ladder.

“I started as data entry clerk and now I am superintendent,” he added.

At the same time, he refutes claims that the company is not concern about the safety of those living within the vicinity. 

He stressed that the Bea Mountain mining company is committed to improve the livelihood of the people and it is doing everything possible to achieve it.

Bea Mountain Superintendent disclosed that the operations are located in Matabo, Nahblama and Kinjor with sixty communities benefiting from their activities.

Mr. Vincent spoke to Liberia Public Radio recently  when President George Weah along with First Lady Clar Marie Weah led array of government officials to break grounds for the construction of a technical school in Kinjor District, Grand Cape Mount County.

Bad labor practice

Bea Mountain one of the giant companies in the Gold and Diamond sector of the country is situated in western Liberia specifically in Kinjor Grand Cape Mount County.

In 2018, it was reported that the company is involved in bad labor practices against Liberians in its employ.
The company which hailed from Belgium has remained said it has corrected all previous concerns regarding labor and the wellbeing of employees.
