Liberia Campus shooting: Police identifies 16-year-old suspect

The Liberia National Police has arrested and is investigating two 11th grade students of the Cyber-ED Christian School of Excellence situated in Sophie Community, Congo Town for allegedly shooting victim Precious Ireland on her neck with a 9mm pistol.

Suspects, Jovanus Oliver Turay, 16yrs and a person of interest, Matthew Gonkerwon, 17yrs were picked up early Tuesday morning April 13, 2021 at 8:00AMs by the Anti Robbery Unit of the Liberia National Police.

Police preliminary probe conducted by the School’s Principal, Mr. J. Emmett Chapin, revealed in his narration that he was urgently called at 7:45AM by one of his colleagues of a shooting sound heard on campus.

He further accounted that eyewitnesses and students saw the three (3) seated in one of the Classrooms listening to music via an earpiece and suddenly saw victim Precious lying unconscious after a gun sound.

The parents of the main suspect, Josia Saah and Sylvanus Turay (lives in the USA) have been cooperating to bringing their Legal Representations to extract statements from the suspected juveniles.

Meanwhile, victim Ireland was later rushed to a nearby Hospital for medical attention, but was pronounced dead upon arrival by nurses on duty.

This is the first of its kinds for such shooting incident on a primary school campus in Liberia.

It is however remains unclear how the 16-year-old made his way with gun into the school’s campus.

Parents  whose children are attending the school are meeting today to determine their next course of action.
