Liberia Public Radio has reliably learnt that former Foreign Affairs Minister Milton Gbehzohngar Findley has been holding consultations with ANC Political Leader, Alexander Cummings, to go as his running mate in 2023 if the current political marriage involving the Unity Party, Liberty Party, Alternative National Congress and the All Liberian Party collapsed.
Recently supporters of the four collaborating political parties have been at each other throats over which of the political leaders should head the collaboration to face President George Weah in 20203, leaving political pundits to speculate that the CPP as it is known will not survive.
The debate over the who heads the CPP has been narrowed down to two, Unity Party Joseph Boakai a former Vice President, and Alexander Benedict Cummings of the Alternative National Congress.
In the face of the inner fights, reports say Mr. Cummings is now looking out for a popular political figure to go as vice president to him. Sources within the ANC say Cummings who came 5th in the 2017 elections has been holding series of conversations with major political actors in the country, including Mr. Gbehzohngar Findley a 2020 defeated senatorial candidate for Grand Bassa County.
“I can tell you that Findley has been meeting with our political leader. The first meeting was held at our party headquarters and the other one took place right at Cummings’ house. Findley says he wants to be vice president”, our source disclosed.
Findley’s was heavily expected to be the Vice running mate former Vice President Joseph Nyumah Baokai of the Unity Party in 2017, but the former VP instead chose then speaker Emmanuel Nuquay of Margibi County as running mate which led to Mr. Findley deflecting to the Coalition for Democratic Change.
Political observers were predicting that former Senate Pro-temp could be President Weah running mate to in 2023 had he Findley won the 2020 senate seat for Grand Bassa.
Since the election Findley has completely disappeared and sources say the former foreign Minister is finding a way to bounce back and is is now busy holding talks with Mr. cummings to be his running mate which could revive his political life.
Though he is from the second popular tribe in Liberia (Bassa) and considers himself as the option to deliver the Bassa belt to potential presidential candidate but critical thinkers are wondering as to what weight will he add to Mr. Cunnings ambition given that he has lost two elections in a roll.
Findley, after serving a 9-year term as senator for Grand Bassa, sought reelection in 2014, but lost to Liberty Party’s Jonathan Karpay obtaining 10, 306 votes amounting to 36.3%, while Karpay got 16, 296 votes, accounting for 57.4%.
He again came second to Liberty Party’s political leader, Senator Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence attaining 20, 346 votes, accumulating to 38.03%, while Madam Karnga-Lawrence accrued 22, 476, amounting to 42.01%.
