MRU ADOPTS COMMUNIQUE TO COMBAT GROWING SECURITY IN THE REGION

Senior Security actors in the Mano River Sub-Regional have adopted a communiqué seeking to address the growing security threats resulting from terrorism and illicit gun trade in the basin.

The communiqué developed by the Ministries of Defense and Chiefs of Defense Staff emphasized the urgent need to reactivate the Joint Security Committee.

It emphasized the reactivation of the Technical Committee and the Joint Border Security and Confidence Building Units. 

The communiqué also called on MRU Member States, Liberia, Sierra Leone,Guinea, and Ivory Coast to ensure coordination at national levels and develop a sub-regional counterterrorism strategy drawing inspiration from ECOWAS.

 The document insists that Member States encourage regular meetings between Security Intelligence agencies as part of efforts to address potential security threats in the regional.

The communiqué was adopted on May 25, 2021 at the end of a two-day Regional conference of Ministers of Defense and Chiefs of Defense Staff of the MRU in Monrovia.

It was organized by the Mano River Union Secretariat and funded by the United Nations Organizations for West Africa and the Sahel to promote cross border security network among members States of the MRU.

The participants, however, expressed happiness with the spirit of mutual understanding and cordiality that prevailed throughout their deliberations.

 They emphasized the need for Member States to support the MRU in the implementation of the plan of action developed in addressing and preventing security related threats, particularly growing terrorism spill over risks to the sub-region.
