Former Ivorian president Laurent Gbagbo will make a “strictly private trip” to Kinshasa, DRC, from July 2 to 8, 2021, his spokesperson, Koné Katinan announced in a statement in Abidjan.

“Mr. Gbagbo will travel to Kinshasa, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) from Friday July 2, 2021 to Thursday July 8, 2021”, indicates a press release signed by Mr. Katinan Koné.

According to the spokesperson for the former Ivorian president, “this trip is strictly private.” He will take a commercial flight from Félix Houphouët Boigny International Airport on Friday, July 2, 2021.

He will also return to Abidjan by commercial flight on Thursday, July 8, 2021, underlines the spokesperson for Mr. Gbagbo, Justin Katinan Koné.

The DRC is the first country where the former Ivorian head of state, Laurent Gbagbo, has traveled outside his country, since his return to Côte d’Ivoire on June 17, 2021.

Mr. Gbagbo was acquitted on March 31, 2021 by the International Criminal Court (ICC) following a trial in the case of crimes against humanity perpetrated during the Ivorian post-election violence from 2010 to 2011.

During his detention in Shevenwingen prison in The Hague, Mr. Laurent Gbagbo reported having had a friendship with Jean-Pierre Bemba.

In addition, he said that many heads of state supported him during his prison stay.
