Calm Restored in Kpatayea Town Lofa County; two locals release from custody

The Youth leader and the Chief Zoe of Kpeteyea Town has been released from police custody days after been arrested for instructing the incarceration of Chinese national working for the Golden Trade Limited a class B gold mining company in the area.

The Five Chinses Nationals were arrested and detained for a day by the Grand Masters after one of them fearless attempted shooting the Grand Master with single barrel pistol on Wednesday July 14. 2021.

The people of Kpeteyea had early Wednesday morning July 14 stormed the company’s operation camp with their traditional grand master to stop all prospecting activities as previously mentioned in a four counts petition to the company urging them to ease all active works on their land as of Monday July 12, 2021 or face traditional action.

Despite been warned of “traditional action” which is the last means of finding solution to problems in rural Liberia, the company refused to adhere to said from the people of Kpateyea.

According to the people of Kpeteyea their decision to halt the operations of Golden Trade Limited is based on the alleged failure of the company to implement its obligations to the community, including the payment of community development fund in the tone of  $900 (nine hundred United states Dollars).

Other issues include the  construction of a 3 bedroom guest house, the payment of scholarship fees to university and college students and the renovation of the Kpeteyea public school within a period of one year as stipulated in the Memorandum of Understanding between both parties.

The people of Kpeteyea entered into a five years agreement with Golden Trade on June 6, 2020 to mine Gold in the area which was witnessed by Salayea District commissioner, Ben Golema and Authorities of the Ministry of Mines and Energy.

Phoning in on a local radio in Zorzor, Lofa County Salayea district commissioner Ben K. Golema has frowned at the citizen’s arrest action terming it as completely out of order.

But locals responding to the Commissioner, described him as has betrayal who is benefiting from the company at the expense of his people.
