Liberia earned all three points courtesy of Striker Kpah Sherman late second half goal in Yaoundé.
The Superior goal by the Malaysian based Striker was his third International goal for Liberia, that was all but enough for the Lone Star to earn their first victory in Group ‘C’ contest on Monday, defeating the Central African Republic.
The visitors were the better side in the first half and wasted a number of chances as Kpah Sherman, Ayouba Kosiah and David Tweh all whom went close range to putting Liberia in the lead in First Half.
But Kpah Sherman’s third international goal earned Liberia what could be a vital three points in their quest to qualify for the 2022 World Cup – with the Red, White and Blue outfit, bouncing back from a two-nil defeat to Nigeria and moving in second place. A goal difference separate the Lone Star from the Eagles of Nigeria, whom later engage the blue shark on Cape Verde on Tuesday.
The result was undeniably a fair reflection of the match – although the manner of the defeat was harsh on CAR, who frustrated their opponents for long periods in the second half and came desperately close to scoring on a number of occasions.
Although the Les Fauves, were clearly the underdogs at the Japoma Stadium in Yaoundé, Cameroun they started the match on one point, ahead of Liberia in Group ‘C’- as they drew 1-1 with the blue shark of Cape Verde in their opening match, while the Lone Star lost 2-0 in their opener against the Nigerian.
Roared on by their infectiously enthusiastic on mission to bounce back from a defeat to the Eagles, Peter Butler team the Lone Star made a positive start, breaking with intent and winning set pieces in dangerous position, and several wasted chances.
Midway in the game Liberia continue to dominate possession, but failed to carve out any clear chances in the opening exchanges until the first half whistle
In the second period, it was obvious that CAR’s primary objective was to frustrate the ‘sluggish’ Liberian team and they did so very effectively. Admittedly, and had numbers of scoring chances wasted too on their part to bury the game in the second half.
The Les Fauves on the mounting pressure from the Lone Star concede quite a few free kicks, under mistakes defending, but their more illustrious opponents Liberia were unable to capitalise on any of these opportunities.
It was until the 86th minute, when Kedah Darul Aman F.C. Kpah Sean Sherman score the stunning goal for the Lone Star his 3rd International goal for Liberia and second in major competition, after he found the back of the net in 1-0 win over CHAD in an Africa Cup of Nation qualifier, his other strike was a 2-1 defeat to Nigeria in Friendly encounter.
Meanwhile, only top spot in each of the groups will progress to the next round of qualification, and while Liberia Lone Star still have three fixtures at home and one away to go, they are well placed in Second position early on in the campaign following this result.
The Lone Star don’t play until next month against the bright Cape Verde side that looks to upset Nigeria at home in tomorrow fixture.
Liberia was playing in Cameroun due to a FIFA ban on the national stadium which was termed unfit for international match.
