As part of efforts to empower Liberian, and reduced poverty, encourage creativity, and promote economic activities, a new program labeled has been launched.
The new project titled: Recovery of Economic Activity for Liberian Informal Sector Employment Project (REALISE Project) was launched officially in Monrovia on Friday, January 14, 2022.
Speaking at the launching ceremony, Liberian President George Manneh emphasized the importance of ‘bridging the gap’ of Poverty among Liberians. Weah reaffirmed that his Government remains committed to lifting Liberia from abject Poverty.
Many Liberians live on less than US$1.00 a day due to the high level of poverty in Liberia but the Weah’s government is optimistic that the new project will left empower Liberians and left many out of poverty.
The new project is part of the government’s development agenda, the Pro-Poor Agenda for Prosperity and Development (PAPD) which is to ensure economic empowerment of Liberians.
“This has been a central theme from Day One, to which we continue to remain committed,” President Weah said.
“We shall remain unrelenting in our resolve and determination to lift this country and its people from poverty,” the President averred.
The project is being founded by the French Government, the World Bank, and other development partners.
Liberia’s Finance Minister Samuel D. Tweah Jr. in brief remark, said that the initiative clearly demonstrates government’s commitment to ensuring economic recovery that should result in an improvement in people’s lives.
For his part, World Bank Country Manager- Liberia Khwima Nthara pledged the bank’s continued support to the empowerment of the young people including the Government’s development agenda: The Pro Poor Agenda For Prosperity and Development (PAPD).
The ministry responsible for youth development in Liberia; Youth and Sports, boss Zeogar Wilson admonished the World Bank for its continues support to developmental initiatives in the country.
The “REALISE” Project seeks to promote economic activities which is expected to empower about 19,000 Liberians in the Greater Monrovia area; 4,000 vulnerable Liberians in the informal sector will receive support to either start a new business or improve existing ones.
According to the project document, about 15,000 Liberians will also be empowered to engage in labor-intensive community-based public works, while improving the environment for the poor and vulnerable in urban areas.
The Agency for French Development (AFD), has committed to support the REALISE Project with a total contribution of approximately €9,000,000 (US$10,271,627.48).
