Former Deputy Speaker and Representative of Grand Bassa County District #1, Hans Barchue, has died
According to Ablee Jay TV, Barchue died early Tuesday morning, July 18, 2023, at a local Hospital in Monrovia, and his remains have been deposited at a funeral home.
According to reports, he died after a long period of illness.
The late Barchue was first elected in the 2011 Presidential and Legislative elections and got reelected in the nation’s 2017 general elections.
Barchue served as Deputy Speaker from January 2012 to January 2018 of the 53rd Legislature. He temporarily acted as Speaker from August to September 2016, when Speaker Alex Tyer formally resigned; which subsequently led to the election of Rep. Emmanuel Nuquay as Speaker. Nuquay is now the senator of Margibi County.
Even though Barchue joined the Liberty Party, he registered as an Independent candidate for the pending 2023 Presidential and Legislative Elections.
The two-term lawmaker was seeking his third term during the pending October 10, 2023, general election, having registered as an independent candidate.
The late Rep. Barchue was a financial and security expert by profession and, as Deputy Speaker, he presided over a nationwide that led to the drafting of a new law for the petroleum sector Liberia in 2013.
