In a surprising turn of events, Edith Gongloe-Weh, former Nimba County Superintendent and a three-time senatorial contender, has thrown her  support behind the incumbent president, George Manneh Weah, in the ongoing presidential runoff election.

Madam Weh who has been a prominent figure in Nimba County’s political landscape, announced her endorsement during a well-attended press conference held in Monrovia earlier Thursday, October 26.

The announcement sent shockwaves through the county’s political circles, as Madam Gongloe  has been a vocal critic of the incumbent president’s administration in the past.

Addressing her supporters and members of the media, the Former Nimba Superintendent explained reasons behind her decision, “After careful consideration and reflection on the needs of Nimba County and our nation, I have decided to endorse George Manneh Weah of the Coalition for Democratic Change  in the upcoming presidential runoff.

We believe Weah is  the best alternative I believe that Weah has demonstrated a commitment to the development of our county and the nation as a whole.”

The endorsement comes as a significant development in the race for the presidency, as Madam Weh  is a well-known and influential figure in Nimba County and she had always finished second in Nimba County Senatorial elections from 2011-2020.

However, it remains unclear if Madam Weh who has been defeated three times endorsement will get a considerable number of voters in the region to offset the popularity of Senator Prince Y. Johnson, the more popular Senator in the County, who is described as the King-maker in Nimba County.

Cllr. Gongloe’s party endorses Boakai

On Wednesday, Madam Weh elderly brother Cllr. Tiawon Saye Gonloe along with his Liberian People’s Party (LPP) pledged support to former Vice President Joseph Nyuman Boakai in the runoff presidential election.

Boakai is the Standard Bearer of the main opposition Unity Party.

Addressing journalists concern on why she did not support her brother’s side Madam Weh said her family is a democratic family in which each of them are free to make their own political decision.

Many political analysts say Madam Weh support to Weah is a ravage against Nimba County political godfather, Prince Yormie Johnson who is on the side of Unity Party standard bearer Joseph Boakai

The endorsement also underscores the dynamic and ever-changing nature of politics, where long-standing rivalries and differences can be set aside in the pursuit of a common goal.

As the presidential runoff election approaches, the question on everyone’s mind is how Nimba former Superintendent endorsement will influence the outcome and the political landscape of Nimba County and the nation as a whole.
