President George Manneh Weah has congratulated Former Vice President Joseph N. Boakai as winner of the 2023 presidential runoff election.

President Weah called Mr. Boakai via telephone following the announcement of provisional results by the National Elections Commission (NEC) on Friday, November 17, 2023. The Liberian Chief Executive said Liberians are the winners of the elections and called on his support to accept the results.

Meanwhile president Weah has spoken of the deep division created by the 2023 election and assured his supporters that he will make a come back in 2029.

The nation watches with bated breath as Joseph Nyumah Boakai, of the Unity Party, stands on the brink of a political triumph with 50.89% ahead of Weah’s 49.11%

As the National Electoral Commission (NEC) diligently counts the final ballots, preliminary results indicate an overwhelming show of support for the opposition, signaling a clear mandate from the people.

 With almost all votes accounted opposition Unity Party has maintained a consistent lead, leaving little room for doubt regarding the outcome.

The atmosphere across Liberia is charged with excitement and anticipation as citizens await the official declaration of final results.

Supporters of the opposition party have taken to the streets in jubilation, celebrating what they see as a turning point in the country’s political landscape. The opposition’s campaign, which focused on rescuing the country economic reform, and anti-corruption measures, appears to have resonated deeply with voters.

The incumbent party, meanwhile, has not conceded defeat, and representatives have called for patience, emphasizing the need for the electoral process to run its course.

About 24 polling places in the county of Grand Kru, where president Weah hails from have been quarantined due to over voting.

  Historic transition awaiting

78-year-old Boakai is set a new record after becoming the first candidate defeat incumbent president in since 1869.

The NEC has assured the public that the final results will be announced in a transparent and timely manner, in adherence to democratic principles.
