Liberia National Police Confirms Arrest of Driver in Unity Party Incident; Multiple Supporters injured

The  Liberia National Police (LNP) has officially confirmed the arrest of the driver responsible for plowing into a crowd of jubilant Unity Party supporters, resulting in to 3 deaths and  several injuries.

 The incident occurred during a celebration after the party standard Bearer Joseph Boakai was announced winner of the November 14, 2023 presidential runoff in Monrovia.

According to eyewitnesses, the driver allegedly drove through the gathering with apparent disregard for the safety of the supporters, causing panic and chaos.

The incident took place  in Central Monrovia where Unity Party members had gathered to celebrate a recent political victory.

The Liberia National Police spokesperson, Moses Carter, addressed the media in a press conference earlier Tuesday November 22, providing details on the arrest.

He named the suspect as one Lawrence Williams, a resident Shara Community in Duport Road Paynesville.

 “We can confirm that the driver involved in the unfortunate incident targeting Unity Party supporters has been apprehended. The individual is currently in custody, and a thorough investigation is underway”, said Carter.

The Police spokesman assured the public that a comprehensive investigation would be conducted to determine the logical conclusion.

 The injured supporters were swiftly transported to [John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital and Mawa Clinic, where medical personnel are working to provide necessary treatment. 
Police has also confirmed 3 deaths and 26 injuries that include 19 males.
 
 
 The Unity Party leadership has expressed their concern over the incident, calling for a transparent and expedited investigation.
In an interview with Ok fm ,Unity Party’s secretary Amos Tweh  “We condemn any act of violence against our supporters or any citizen. We trust that the authorities will conduct a thorough investigation, and justice will be served.”
The incident has sparked public discussions with some accusing the current ruling Coalition for Democratic (CDC) of being behind the incident.
The Liberia National Police has assured the public that they are committed to ensuring a fair and impartial inquiry into the incident.
