In a  turn of events, Mulbah Morlu, the former chairman of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), has announced his resignation from the party.

Morlu, who has been a prominent figure in Liberian politics for over a decade, is set to assume a new leadership role in a major civil society organization (CSO) named Solidarity and Trust for a New Day (STAND), signaling a shift in his career toward advocacy and social impact.

Morlu expressed his reasons for stepping down from the CDC, a party he has been instrumental in shaping and leading to significant political victories, including the election of President George Weah. He emphasized his desire to contribute to the country’s development from a different platform.

Some insiders told Liberia Public Radio that Mr. Morlu and the CDC top officials have not been on good terms for some time now, especially after the 2023 election that led to the defeat of ex-president George Weah.

Morlu’s new role will be as the Executive Director of Solidarity and Trust for a New Day (STAND), a new advocacy CSO that focuses on human rights, governance, and social development in Liberia.

The STAND has been at the forefront of various campaigns advocating for transparency, accountability, and equitable development in Liberia in recent time.

In his new capacity, Morlu aims to spearhead initiatives that address critical issues such as poverty, corruption, and the empowerment of marginalized communities. He highlighted the importance of robust civil society organizations in strengthening democracy and promoting sustainable development.

A political pundit, who preferred to remain anonymous, told Liberia Public Radio that Morlu’s departure leaves a significant gap in the leadership of the CDC. Morlu is now being succeeded by former Comptroller General Janga Kowo as acting Party Chairman. Analysts suggest that this transition period will be critical for the CDC as it navigates internal dynamics and external pressures.

“Morlu’s resignation could lead to a period of introspection and restructuring within the CDC. It will be important for the party to reaffirm its commitment to its core values and to continue to engage with its supporters effectively,” said Joseph Toby, a longtime follower of CDC.
