Information Minister Jerolinmek Piah criticized former President George Weah’s recent statement against the government as “empty,” and referred to Weah’s administration as a “scam that looted the country on an industrial scale.”

Minister Piah made these remarks during a press briefing in Monrovia, dismissing Weah’s threats of resisting the government’s persecution of alleged corrupt officials as a distraction from the ongoing comprehensive audits of government institutions. He emphasized that Weah’s statement should not be given any attention,

questioning how a former president could speak so loosely without a solid argument and emphasizing that Weah lacks the moral standing to comment on the issues raised in his statement.

The Minister further noted that the government is undeterred by Weah’s remarks, recalling instances of witch hunts within government entities during Weah’s six-year tenure.

On Wednesday, July 31, 2024, former President George Manneh Weah described the indictment of some former officials from his administration as a “witch-hunt.” He also stated that the former ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) will pursue legal action against the government of Boakai.

The CDC is planning to engage its members to strategize on resisting efforts by the Unity Party (UP) government to ‘misuse’ the judiciary. Weah also highlighted the forced removal of officials in tenured positions, including the recent suspension of the Central Bank of Liberia (CBL) Governor.

He called on the international community to investigate these actions to prevent potential government violations of the law. Weah stressed the importance of preserving the stability that Liberia has enjoyed for 20 years since the civil war and urged the current government not to jeopardize this peace.

Additionally, he called on other opposition political parties to join the CDC in combating actions by the government.
