The Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) has warned lawmakers that failure to show up for a critical meeting on Monday could result in expulsion.
The purpose of the event was to mobilize support for House Speaker Fonati Koffa in the face of opposition legislators’ potential removal of him.
The significance of solidarity and backing for Speaker Koffa was underscored by CDC Secretary General Jefferson Koijee during a press conference on October 19, 2024, at the party’s headquarters in Congo Town.
He declared that Koffa would lead a procession with party members to the Capitol Building to preside over the legislative session on Tuesday after the Monday meeting.
Koijee also called on the international community to remind President Joseph Boakai of his duty to uphold peace and refrain from provoking instability, accusing Boakai of being behind the attempts to remove Speaker Koffa.
“The party will be forced to respond with large-scale demonstrations demanding Speaker Fonati Koffa’s resignation in order to maintain peace if the President conspires against him,” Koijee cautioned.
He reaffirmed the principles of democracy, openness, and the rule of law that Liberia was established on and warned that any departure from them would be fiercely opposed.
