Ethiopian Airlines resumed its flights to Liberia with the inaugural flight landing in Monrovia on Saturday, November 30, 2024.
The flight carried over 200 passengers and was celebrated with a grand ceremony attended by Liberia’s President, several senior government officials, and a delegation from Ethiopian Airlines.
The resumption of flights to Liberia highlights the airline’s commitment to strengthening economic, cultural, and social ties across Africa. Speaking at the Farmington Hotel near Roberts International Airport, the country President Joseph Boakai emphasized that the return of Ethiopian Airlines represents a significant achievement in reinforcing the relationship between Liberia and Ethiopia.
He noted that it provides a major boost to Liberia’s aviation and tourism sectors.
President Boakai stated that Ethiopian Airlines’ return signifies Liberia’s growing economic potential and reaffirms the long-standing partnership between the two nations. He remarked, “Ethiopian Airlines’ return to Liberia signifies much more than the reopening of air routes; it is a powerful symbol of our long-standing friendship, mutual respect, and shared African heritage.”
The President also highlighted the historical connection between Liberia and Ethiopia, underscoring their shared roles as pioneers of African independence and advocates for Pan-Africanism.
He expressed his commendation for Ethiopian Airlines, noting, “Ethiopian Airlines is a source of pride for all of Africa.”
The recommencement of direct flights between Monrovia and Addis Ababa is expected to create new opportunities for trade, tourism, and cooperation in sectors such as education and culture. The President indicated that this development will serve as a bridge for closer economic and diplomatic ties, foster investment, and create job opportunities, particularly in the aviation and tourism sectors.
“This historic flight marks a new era of cooperation that reaffirms our commitment to African solidarity and the broader vision of a peaceful, prosperous, and integrated continent,” President Boakai asserted. He concluded by emphasizing that the resumption of Ethiopian Airlines flights is not merely a bilateral achievement but a reflection of the larger Pan-African vision of unity and progress.
Ethiopian Airlines Group Chief Commercial Officer Mr. Lemma Vadecha also spoke at the event, expressing optimism about the new destination and its potential to enhance economic integration and promote tourism. “On this day, we are not only celebrating your birthday, Mr. President, but a new partnership between our two countries,” Mr. Vadecha remarked.
He added, “Ethiopian Airlines has a long-standing history with Monrovia, having begun its first-class service to this city in November 1966.” Mr. Vadecha stated that the airline is pleased to resume flights to Monrovia, reinforcing its dedication to connecting Africa and promoting intra-African trade in line with the vision of providing the best travel experience.
With the implementation of three weekly flights to Monrovia, the airline will offer connectivity through its Addis Ababa hub.
The return of Ethiopian Airlines to Liberia is poised to facilitate trade, tourism, and cultural exchange, contributing to the socio-economic development of both nations. This strategic move aims to strengthen ties between Ethiopia and Liberia while contributing to the broader vision of African unity.
