President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. has announced the indefinite suspension of Madam Davidetta Browne-Lansanah, Chairperson of the National Elections Commission (NEC), due to concerns regarding adherence to the Elections Law.

This decision follows recent protests from NEC staff regarding administrative actions allegedly taken without proper consultation. Investigations revealed that Madam Browne-Lansanah had unilaterally announced a temporary closure of the NEC office for one month and dismissed 25 employees without prior approval from the NEC Board of Commissioners, as required by law.

The President emphasized Sections 2.1 and 2.10(d) of the Elections Law, which grant collective decision-making authority to the NEC Board of Commissioners. These provisions mandate that any corrective actions involving staff must be made in consultation with the Board, ensuring appropriate checks and balances within the Commission.

“Despite an ongoing committee investigation into the grievances of NEC staff, Madam Browne-Lansanah took unilateral actions that undermined the stability and integrity of the institution,” the President stated. He also noted that such decisions could jeopardize the NEC’s preparedness for upcoming by-elections and contribute to a divisive work environment.

The Government of Liberia reaffirmed its commitment to promoting transparency, accountability, and the rule of law, especially in institutions like the NEC that are crucial for sustaining Liberia’s democratic governance.
