As concerns about the true size and internal unity of the Majority Bloc grow, their attempts to unseat the embattled Speaker J. Fonati Koffa in the House of Representatives appear to be stalling.
On Monday, April 28, the Majority Bloc struggled to present a united and credible front during a press conference that was broadcast live on various internet platforms.
Only 31 representatives were physically present, though bloc members claimed there were 37 in attendance.
Discrepancies emerged during the roll call of absent lawmakers. The Clerk of the House appeared uncertain about the number of absentees, which varied between 10 and 14 at different times. Despite these contradictions, the group ultimately asserted that they had the support of 49 lawmakers.
Critics quickly questioned the arithmetic. If there were 37 lawmakers present and 14 were absent, the total should be 51, not 49. This raised doubts, especially following the recent election of Representatives Emmanuel Dahn and Thomas Romeo Quioh. Assuming their initial figure of 43 was correct, the bloc’s confirmed strength would only grow to 45 with the addition of these two representatives.
The situation was further complicated by recent defections from the Minority side, which were effectively neutralized when two members, Representatives Austin B. Taylor and DJ Blue, reportedly left the Majority Bloc, adding to the uncertainty. Although Representatives Taa Wongbe and Moima Briggs Mensah publicly distanced themselves from Majority Bloc activities, their inclusion in the bloc’s count raised additional questions.
“Why are they manipulating their figures?” a political analyst remarked. “They even forged the resolution signature again.” This dispute highlights the ongoing leadership crisis in the House and casts doubt on the Majority Bloc’s ability to unseat Speaker Koffa, given that a two-thirds majority is required by the constitution.
As the political stalemate continues, there is mounting pressure for transparency and a legally supported resolution.
The House of Representatives has been in confusion since October of last year after some members attempted to remove Speaker Koffa.
