The fake news went wide on social media

In a statement issued on Thursday, May 22, 2025, the National Agency for Information Systems Security of Côte d’Ivoire (ANSSI) clarified that rumors of a supposed coup d’état in Côte d’Ivoire are “false and completely unfounded.

” These claims have been circulated on social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.

The agency noted, “Posts currently circulating on social media suggest that a coup d’état has occurred in Côte d’Ivoire,” but they firmly rejected this allegation as “wholly baseless.”

According to ANSSI, these rumors are the result of a deliberate and coordinated disinformation campaign.

Furthermore, the agency emphasized that spreading misleading information is a criminal offense that carries legal consequences. Liberia Public Radio’s correspondent in Abidjan quoted ANSSI as urging the public to exercise caution and to rely solely on official sources when seeking information.
