A fire broke out early Wednesday morning at the 9th Street residence of former Liberian President George Manneh Weah, causing extensive damage to the property but leaving the former leader unharmed.

According to eyewitness accounts, the blaze began shortly after midnight in the bedroom of Mr. Weah. Neighbors reportedly responded to calls for help and attempted to contain the flames before emergency services arrived. Fire trucks and an ambulance were seen departing the compound, though journalists were not permitted entry.

Janga Kowo, Acting Chairman of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), visited the scene and described the fire as “massive.”

“We’re trying to understand what happened because this is very concerning. We’re talking about the bedroom of the former president,” Mr. Kowo told reporters.

The incident drew several prominent political figures to the site, including former House Speaker Fonati Koffa, former Minister of State Nathaniel McGill, Montserrado County Representative Acarous Gray, and former Foreign Minister Maxwell Kemayah.

The fire occurred just two days after Mr. Weah’s return to Liberia, where he was greeted by supporters at Roberts International Airport. During his homecoming, the former president pledged to lead efforts to rebuild the CDC headquarters, which was recently demolished.
