Monrovia, Liberia — The Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) has broken ground on a new party headquarters, a move that former House Speaker Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa described as emblematic of former President George Weah’s anticipated return to political leadership in 2029.

Speaking at the ceremony on Saturday, Koffa, who chairs the CDC Headquarters Construction Committee, framed the new complex as a symbol of resilience and renewal following what he termed the “unprecedented eviction and demolition” of the party’s previous headquarters under the Unity Party-led administration.

“This is a sophisticated structure that will emerge as a symbol that truth crushed to the ground will rise again,” Koffa declared, invoking themes of justice and perseverance. In a moment of levity, he added, “I know the Ministry of Mines and Pa Cuss will get ready for me, but thank God Ma and Pa are dead — they will not hear it.”

The event drew thousands of CDC supporters, many of whom viewed the groundbreaking as a turning point for the party, which has been seeking to regroup after its electoral defeat and the loss of its headquarters two months ago. Analysts say the ceremony has reignited enthusiasm among the party’s base and could mark the beginning of a strategic buildup toward the 2029 elections.

Koffa also delivered a pointed critique of the current government, accusing it of failing the Liberian people and politicizing the country’s security forces. He recounted a conversation with a Unity Party supporter who claimed the party “knows how to use power.” Koffa responded, “We don’t want to know that type of power if understanding how to wield it means converting the police who are supposed to protect demonstrators into a shoot-and-kill murder squad.”

The CDC’s new headquarters is expected to be completed ahead of the next electoral cycle, positioning the party for what it hopes will be a political resurgence.
