President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. has nominated Mr. Jonathan K. Weedor as Chairman of the National Elections Commission (NEC), following the resignation of Madam Davidetta Browne-Lansanah.
Mr. Weedor brings extensive expertise in electoral administration, governance, and public service. He previously served as Commissioner of the NEC from 2004 to 2020, overseeing critical departments including Human Resources, Finance, and Procurement.
During his tenure, he also acted as Co-Chairman, playing a pivotal role in strengthening the credibility and management of Liberia’s electoral processes.
Beyond his national contributions, Mr. Weedor has participated in numerous international electoral missions across Africa. His assignments include engagements with electoral bodies in Kenya, Ghana, and Nigeria, as well as observation and assessment missions under the auspices of the African Union and ECOWAS.
Academically, Mr. Weedor holds a Master of Arts degree with Honors in Development Studies, specializing in Development Management, from the School for International Training in Vermont, USA. He also earned a Bachelor of Science degree with Honors in General Forestry from the University of Liberia.
Pending Senate confirmation, President Boakai has directed Mr. Weedor to serve as Acting Chairman of the NEC until the Senate reconvenes from its current recess.
The President expressed confidence in Mr. Weedor’s competence, integrity, and professionalism, emphasizing his expectation that under Weedor’s leadership, the NEC will continue to uphold transparency, independence, and credibility in the conduct of Liberia’s elections.
