Nimba Storm victims cry out for help; several residents homeless

Sanniquellie City,Nimba- Heavy rainstorm over the weekend left several residents homeless in Nimba County Electoral Districts #1, 2 and 4.

According to our reporter who visited the scene across the three affected districts, about 98 houses got damaged by the rainstorm on Friday night May 1, 2020 in Behlehglay Town District # 4, while about 20 houses got destroyed in Mankinto District # 2.

 Additionally, about 15 homes got destroyed in a community of Gbuyee in District # 1. 

Speaking to LPR, the Town chief Baylehglay Mr. Nathaniel T. Gban explained that, 32 of the 98 houses were leveled  to foundation  while the others were de-roofed as a result of  the rainstorm.

Behlehglay is the headquarters for Zoegbao administrative district in Twah River Nimba county district #4 with over 500  inhabitants.

Over 100 persons in the town of Mankinto in District # 2 were also rendered homeless on Tuesday night following heavy storm that destroyed their homes. 

Mankinto # 1 is one of the towns located in the affected communities of Arcelor Mittal concession area off side the main road leading to Yekepa in Nimba County. 

Sounding the appeal on behalf of the victims, the Town chief of Mankinto Arthur Flomo lamented that  the rainstorm created serious setback for  the entire town and its surrounding areas.  

Town chief Flomo explained that the victims are now seeking for shelter with other community members and family in nearby communities.

He maintained that the situation has some underlying health implications on grounds that the Ministry of Health has mandated citizens not to gather in large crowd, something he said is beyond their control for now. 

“More than 20 persons are now living in one house for now, because of the situation”, he adds.

Explaining to reporters in tears, one of the victims Emmanuel Flomo who is a cyclist said that he is only looking up to good will people to come to his aid for rescue as there is no solution for him now. 

The two chiefs have however on behalf of their citizens called on the government of Liberia, local authorities, and national organizations to help intervene into the natural disaster.

According to them, the affected households are seeking for shatter at their neighbor residents, while some are in the kitchens of their neighbors something that needs quick intervention.

It can be recalled that about 20 houses got destroyed in Kentorkporglay Town in Zor clan in District # 3 in Nimba County leaving g several persons homeless up to present time. 

The storm victims are calling on the  Liberia National Red Cross, the local Disaster Committee of Nimba and the county administration of the county to assist them with building materials in order to rebuild their  homes.
