As part of activities marking this year’s celebration, bicycle riders in Liberia on Wednesday, June 3, 2020 assembled at the Winners Chapel Church in Congo Town, where they commenced riding in group, to Mamba Point in central Monrovia and back.

The exercise which began at 7:00am and ended at 9:00am, called on all bikers to wear a helmet and bright colour outfits to become eligible for the ride.

In a press statement released Wednesday in Monrovia, the organizer of the event, Yana Tumakova, advisor, capacity development in the transport sector in Liberia, indicated that the bright colors serve as reflectors for other road users.

This exercise is aimed at creating awareness of the club and encouraging others to join the ride.

The Traffic Section of the Liberia National Police, representatives of the Ministry of Transport, Liberia Cycling Association, and media practitioners were among those invited to grace the occasion.

“In the wake of the pandemic, cycling is not only a great way to stay healthy (not only in times of the COVID-19 outbreak) and is a suitable alternative to gyms which had to close in the last months. But cycling is also an effective way to support physical distancing and to relieve the burden on public transport during a pandemic,” the statement added.

Worldwide, in Berlin, New York, Bogotá, the topic of pop-up bike lanes has developed great momentum in recent weeks. P

op-up bike lanes (also called emergency bike lanes) are temporary bike lanes that enable social distancing by providing more space for cyclists on the one hand and relieving the public transport system on the other.

In a comment stressing the essence of bike riding as an exercise, Nathaniel Toe, one of the members of the club said bike riding relieves stress and it is good for the heart muscles.

He used the occasion to call on the youth, boys and girls, old and elderly to take advantage of the opportunity to join the club and stay healthy.
