The Environs Care-Liberia (ENICA) has suggested that environmental education should be part of the school curriculum to educate the young generation the significant of hygiene and sanitation in Liberia.
According to the Executive Director of ENICA, Sennay Carlor III, the teaching of the environmental education within the Liberia school system will go a long way to enhance hygiene and sanitation practices in the various communities across the nation.
Director Carlor made the statement over the weekend at the launching program of the New Community Sanitation Team held in Lower Virginia outside Monrovia.
He stressed that incorporating environmental education within the school system will strengthen awareness about good hygiene and sanitation practices in the society.
He noted that some houses in communities have no toilet and bathroom which poses serious health hazard in various communities around the country.
Director pinpointed that environmental issues are one of the leading causes for diseases such as pneumonia, skin infections, colds or flu, thread worms infection, Hepatitis A, Trachoma and among others.
He indicated that sanitation and hygiene practices require the collective effort of all community dwellers to ensure healthy environment and healthy people.
He maintained that educating community dwellers about the cleanness and protection of the environment through environmental education could prevent diseases among the people.
The ENICA Boss emphasized that Liberians should prioritized environmental education awareness in schools and religious institutions through seminars and dialogue discussions to foster behavior change toward the environment.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the New Community in Lower Virginia, Jacob Yeah said the New Community Sanitation Team is determine to ensure that the community remain clean and healthy.
Chairman Yeah stated that sanitation team engaged into house to house waste management collection of garbage in the community and disposed them at the designated sites in the community.
He noted that since the sanitation team embarked on this process of collecting garbage in the community, it has prevented the spread of garbage’s around the community.
He indicated that New Community Sanitation Team intents to incorporate this method of garbage collecting in District # 17 in Montserrado County to keep the district clean and healthy.
Chairman Yeah then called on local government officials, prominent citizens, local and international organizations to help equip the team with sanitation and hygiene materials to enhance their operation.
