Liberia’s Gender Minister Williminta Piso Saydee Tarr has presented to President George Weah, a draft-work plan to tackle sexual and gender-based violence in Liberia.
The document which is titled “Government of Liberia and Partners’ Road Map on Ending SGBV, A call to Action 2020-2022” was crafted by the Inter-Ministerial Taskforce on SGBV constituted by President George Weah recently.
Minister Tarr presenting the document at the start of the ongoing cabinet retreat in Monrovia said the document would address the increase in rape cases and other forms of violence in Liberia.
“This road map intends to change the current dynamics of business, as usual, to improve the norms because we came into an administration to bring about change; wherein there will be robust, effective and adequately funded events and responds to SGBV across all sectors.
We look forward to enhancing accountability and sustainability collective action and civic engagement,” Min. Tarr said.
It comes days after thousands of anti-rape campaigners took to the street in Monrovia and other parts of Liberia protesting over the increase wave of rape cases in the country.
The protesters were demanding the president to declare rape a national emergency; while calling on the legislature to enact tougher laws against rapists.
Over 950 rape and domestic violence related cases have been recorded since 2020, a report from the Gender Ministry says.
Many of the cases according to the report are minors between the ages of 3 to 15.
