President George Manneh Weah has granted all Muslims employees of government to stay away from work on Thursday May 13 in observance of Ramadan.
In an Executive Mansion statement issued on Wednesday May 12, 2021, said the special exemption will enable them to properly carry out their religious rites.
According to the statement, President Weah congratulated the Muslim Community, urging them to pray for the peace and development of Liberia and also the end of the Coronavirus being experienced by the world.
“As my Liberian Muslim brothers and sisters climax the end of Ramadan 2021, I congratulate and thank all of them for their moral and spiritual endurance, far-sightedness and prayers offered for our beloved nation and people”
“ I also wish to commend all Muslims for remaining law-abiding and patriotic during these very difficult and trying times in our nation’s history”, He emphasized
The Liberian Leader call on all Muslims to continue to pray for peace, and a reconciled Liberia that will bring about national development and social cohesion.
Meanwhile, The President has charged all Muslims to avoid violence in their bid to resolve land disputes, because a violent approach to land disputes has the potential to derail and undermine the peace lasting peace.
Thousands of Muslims across Liberia on Thursday May 13, 2021 joined millions of Muslims around the world to mark the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
During the 30 days fasting and prayer Muslims stay away from food and water during the daylight until 7:00PM in the evening.
Islam in Liberia is practiced by an estimated 12.2% of the population.
The vast majority of Liberian Muslims are Malikite Sunni, with sizeable Shia and Ahmadiyya minorities.
The primary Muslim ethnic groups are the Vai and Mandingo but also Gbandi, Kpelle and other ethnic groups.
