Members of the House of Representatives finally endorsed a committee report recommending the suspension of Representative Yekeh Kolubah for 16 sitting days without salary and benefits.
The body’s latest decision followed a committee report, recommending the suspension of the Montserrado County District 10 lawmaker for two months.
Recently, members of the Liberian House of Representatives, through a plenary decision suspended Representative Kolubah because of his constant use of invectives against President George Weah.
Representative Yekeh Kolubah has since denied any wrongdoing and said he’s politically hunted by the ruling party.
The action of the House of Representatives was later challenged by Representative Kolubah at the Supreme Court – a situation which led to the overturning of the body’s decision.
At a conference hearing on April 22, 2021, Justice-in-Chambers Joseph Nagbe said the House did not accord Rep. Kolubah due process as outlined in Rule 48.4 of the House of Representatives.
The rule states that before a disciplinary action can be taken against any member, the speaker shall refer the matter to the Committee on Rules and Order, and the House, after examining the report and recommendations submitted by that committee, shall render its decision, and the decision shall be final.
What did the committee report say?
According to the committee report read openly in Plenary by the Deputy Chief Clerk Sayfa Geeplay, Rep. Kolubah refused to attend its invitation on countless occasions, and termed his action as a deliberate attempt to stall the hearing to nullify the complaints raised against him.
However, during Tuesday’s sitting, members of the House of Representatives, haven taken cue from the legal correction provided by the Supreme Court Justice in Chamber, endorsed the body’s Rules, Order and Administration Committee report to suspend the Montserrado County District 10 lawmaker.
Yekeh Kolubah who is from the opposition Alternative National Congress (ANC), has previously vowed to continue speaking against the ills of the Weah-led administration until it is corrected.
Johnson Gwaikolo, chair of the House’s committee on Rules, Order and Administration told OK FM Wednesday May 19, 2021 that Rep. Kolubah will forgo all of his benefits and salary for the period while serving his suspension and will be ordered to turnover his official honorable license plate.
