President George Weah, Cabinet and Frist Lady Earmark 20 Million Scholarship Project in Margibi County

Kakata, Margibi County, Liberia_Liberian President George M. Weah, the Frist Lady Clara Weah and the key members of the Liberian Cabinet have earmarked a $20 Million Liberian Dollars Scholarship Program. The scholarship which is equivalent to US$117,647.05 is designed to provide financial support to deserving students in Margibi County.
The sponsors of the scholarship scheme said that their flagship financial aid to students in the county will help them gain access to education and acquire the requisite knowledge to prepare them to as future leaders of the country.
Presidential Affairs Minister Nathaniel F. McGill who launched the Scholarship program at the Booker Washington Institute in Kakata, Margibi County over the weekend, disclosed that the scholarship project will be supported by the President of the Republic of Liberia, George Manneh Weah, who is committed to provide $10 million Liberian Dollars, while First Lady Clara M. Weah plans to donate $1million LD, and the remaining of the $9 million Liberian Dollars will be spread over key members of the Liberian Cabinet.
Minister McGill said the scholarship program is a gesture to Margibians which is intended to provide opportunities for less fortunate students and parents who are struggling to financially supporting their children to access quality education in that part of the country.
He indicated that “Liberia as a country lies in the hands of the young people, so as such there is a need to prepare them educationally in order to have a better nation.”
Minister McGill cautioned Margibi educational administrators not to politicize the opportunity, but to instead use it as an access to educate their children. He added that “This scholarship is not for politics, it for all of us, whether you from party A or Party B, every one of us needs to support this program for all to benefit.” He emphasized that “This is not about CDC as people may perceive” the scholarship initiative.
For his part Margibi County Assistant Superintendent for Development, J Francis Karpu Sr., lauded President Weah for such initiative and said the scholarship funds drive is key to alleviating poverty on the poor. He added that it will help the poorer and less fortunate people to send their children to school for a brighter tomorrow.
Assistant Superintendent Karpu noted that scholarship program is geared to supporting thousands of students from across the five districts of Margibi County. He added that the initiative will be supervised by a trusted committee and will be monitored by both the McGill’s foundation and the County Administration.
Also speaking on behalf of the Margibi County Legislative Caucus, the Chair of the Caucus and District #1 Representative Tibelrosa Tarponweh, stressed the important role of education to national development.
He said that while leaders of Margibi County are exerting efforts to build up the resource capacity of the young people within the County, the Margibi remains challenged in supporting educational activities due to the lack of adequate funding.
Further, Margibi County Superintendent Jerry Varnie thanked President Weah for the kind gesture to students of his county and pledged his commitment to ensure that the scholarships will be use for the intended purpose.
At the same time scores of students who attended the in-door program from various learning institutions across Margibi County commended President Weah through Minister Nathaniel McGill for the scholarship project.
The students in separate remarks, referred to the President of the Republic of Liberia His Excellency Dr. George Weah as, “illiteracy medicine, bad road medicine and a leader that cares for his people.”
Meanwhile, this is the second time the that Minister McGill spearheaded such educational initiative. Recently Presidential Affairs Nathaniel McGill along with Vice President Jewel- Howard -Taylor and key government officials launched a $30 Million Liberian Dollars Scholarship Fund Drive in Bong County.
