River Cess, the county which was crowned Champions of the 2006/2007 edition of the National County Sports Meet in both football and kickball categories, is said to be stranded in Monrovia ahead of the official kickoff to the 2021/2022 edition of the biggest sports festivity in Liberia.
The county is in zone with Bong, Grand Kru and regional host, Nimba.
The teams, which have been in Monrovia for nearly three weeks camping, is expected to depart Monrovia for Sanniquillie today December 8, 2021 for her first game with Nimba on December 12, but is said to be struggling financially.
The chair of the county sports stirring committee for River Cess, Emmanuel Browne, said the teams are tactically and physically fit, but have very poor financial standing.
According to Chairman Browne, some prominent citizens including NPA boss, Bill Twehway, Senatorial Aspirant Joe Grant, NPP Secretary-General Andrew Peters, Hon. Vincent Willie and Representative Aspirant Amuchin Yeanay, have made contributions towards the county, but those interventions are insufficient to address the overall needs of the squads. He called on prominent River Cess to intervene.
“As we speak, the county is in high spirit. We are physically, mentally and tactically fit, but the problem here for now is money. We don’t have money to transport the teams and technical staff. We don’t have money to lodge our players in Nimba.
No camp outfit. We’re calling on our people to come tour aid”, Chairman Browne told Gtv Liberia via mobile phone today.
He continues: “Mr. Bill Twehway spent the total of US$5,810; Mr. Andrew Peters gave US$220; Hon. Joe Grant paid US$5,000 for the hotel hosting the boys; Rep. Vincent Willie gave US$100 and two bags of rice, while Rep. Byron Zahnwea transported our county based players to Monrovia. We’re grateful for their support”.
The sports steering committee chair fathered that River Cess received from national government through the Ministry of Youths and Sports US$2,000 for preparation, while the county through the County Development Fund gave US$4,000.
Even though the cost for transporting River Cess based players to Monrovia by Representative Zahnwea is yet to be known, sports enthusiasts think members of the county legislative caucus have not done much to supporting their pride.
