In a surprising turn of events, the third-place candidate in the Liberia presidential race, Edward W. Appleton, has endorsed Unity Party Standard Bearer Joseph N. Boakai in the upcoming runoff election.
This unprecedented move followed a significant meeting between Appleton, President George Weah, and Joseph Boakai, which took place earlier today.
The endorsement is seen as a major boost in the highly contested presidential election, as Appleton had garnered substantial support during the initial round of voting obtaining over 40,000 votes. The joint appearance with both President Weah and Joseph Boakai is being hailed as a display of unity and commitment to the democratic process.
During a brief endorsement program held at Grassroot Democratic Party (GDM) in Monrovia Tuesday November 7, 2023 Mr. Appleton spoke passionately about the need for lifting the ordinary Liberians out of poverty. He emphasized that their decision to endorse Joseph Boakai was motivated by a shared vision for Liberia’s future and the well-being of its citizens.
“We must first of all appreciate the members of the GDM and Mr. Standard Bearer we ask that you carry our ideology”, he told his supporters.
“We believe that Unity party ideology align with ours. We believe that our best days are ahead”, added in a statement.
He said his party ideology is based on the lifting the ordinary people out of poverty and not all about himself.
Joseph Boakai, the candidate now enjoying the support of Appleton’s support expressed his gratitude and shared his enthusiasm for working together towards a brighter future for the country.
“I believe this is a genuine decision desire in the interest of every Liberian,” Amb Boakai said.
In recent times Ex-VP Boakai has been getting endorsements from some prominent political figures in Liberia supporting his presidential bid in the runoff election against incumbent president George Manneh Weah.
Both Weah and Boakai got 43.83% and 43.44% votes respectively in the initial poll held on October 10, 2023.
About 2.4 million people registered to votes in the October 10, 2023 elections.
