Boakai on victory
Former VP Boakai defeated incumbent President George Manneh Weah with 50.64% in the just ended election

President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr is in  Accra, Ghana,  on a two-day visit. During this visit, he will hold consultations with both the outgoing and incoming Presidents of Ghana, Excellencies Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and John Dramani Mahama.

In addition to these discussions, President Boakai will attend the wedding ceremony of the daughter of a longtime friend. According to the Executive Mansion, this visit highlights the strong bond of friendship and cooperation between Liberia and Ghana and reaffirms the President’s commitment to fostering regional solidarity and collaboration. He will be accompanied by Samuel Kofi Woods, the National Security Advisor.

While the President is away, the Honorable Counselor Oswald N. Tweh, Minister of Justice, will preside over the Cabinet and maintain contact with the Vice President as well as consult with the President. President Boakai is expected to return to the capital on Monday, December 30, 2024.

The President’s use of a private plane for this trip has drawn criticism, particularly because his party previously condemned such practices while they were in opposition. The Unity Party accused former President George Manneh Weah of misusing state funds to charter private jets for travel abroad.

It remains unclear what specific topics President Boakai will discuss with his Ghanaian counterparts. Some critics argue that the visit may not be necessary, especially given the perceived lack of tangible benefits for Liberia in return for the trip.
