Unknown men threaten NEC Chairman over bye-elections result

The Chairman of the National Election Commission of Liberia has alarmed threat against he and his family lives  by unknown individuals, Liberia Public Radio has learnt.

According to reports, the unknown men who allegedly barricaded the home of Cllr. Jerome Kokoyah were demanding the speedy release of the just ended Montserrado County bye-elections result on ground that the NEC chairman is attempting to cheat the ruling party’s candidates.

Both candidates of ruling and opposition parties have been claiming victory in the recent bye-elections ahead of the final result announcement.

Speaking to the Voice of America (VOA) Day Break Africa  program on Friday morning, Cllr. Jerome Korkoyah explained that he received a phone call on Thursday evening while on his way home that some unknown individuals were chanting slogans and threatened to brunt down his house along with his family. 

According to Chairman Korkoyah, the unknown individuals disclosed their actions to what they termed as delay in releasing the just ended Montserrado County senatorial and representative bye election. 

He further explained that he informed Liberias Justice Minister about the situation and officers of the Liberia National Police were immediately assigned there to cliam the situation. 

Korkoyah further explained that the constitution of Liberia gives 15 days to the National Election Commission to announce results after vote has been cast. 

He maintained that out of the over one thousand plus polling stations across Montserrado, they have completed about 90% of the tallying for the senatorial post. 

The NEC chairman revealed that there were complain field by candidates against some of their poll workers citing irregularities and one of such complain coming from Telia Urey of the All Liberian Party who is one of the  contestants in the District 15 representative bye election in Montserrado County. 

Korkoyah further asserted that areas that complain were filed against has been quarantined and investigated for possible outcome. 

 No arrest has been made by the Liberia National Police up to present time.
