Liberia’s former speaker of the 53rd legislature Alex Jenekai Tyler has vowed to contest in the 2020 senatorial election in Bomi County while at the same time describing his involving in the Sable Mining bribery case as political “witch-hunt”

Making the disclosure Monday on a local Radio station OK morning Rush, former speaker Tyler said his decision to contest for the senatorial position is based on his passion to serve his people.

Tyler served as Representative of Bomi County District 1 for 12 years and was also speaker of the House of Representatives of Liberia from 2007 to 2016. He was first elected as the Representative for District 1 of Bomi in 2005.

The former speaker said he feels that he still has potential to deliver Bomi County, as such; he wants to take on the leadership of the county.

Tyler will be contesting against the current senator Sando Dazoe Johnson, former senior senator and former acting Senate Pro Temporary Lahai Gbargbar Lansanah among others.

Former senator Lansanah was elected to the Liberian Senate  in the 2005 general election as Senior Senator from the Bomi County . He is one of two senators from the NDPL and was the Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Defense from 2008–2009.

Lawsuit against GoL

Tyler was recently acquitted along with some former and present government officials by the criminal court ‘C’ for their alleged involvement in the sable mining bribery case.

Commenting on the case, Tyler mentioned that the was no law change in the interest of anyone as alleged by Global Witness and the government of Liberia.

He described his link to the case as a ‘political witch-hunt’. He maintained that there was no evidence proven against him to indict him of the crime leveled by Global Witness and the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf’s administration.

The former speaker revealed that his legal team representing him in the case are putting documents together whether to file a lawsuit against the government for character assassination.

Tyler Political party, Liberia People Democratic Party (LPDP) is party of the three political parties that made up of the governing Coalition for Democratic Change that brought President Weah to power in 2018.

It remains unclear if Mr. Tyler will go head with his decision since his party is part of the ruling establishment.
