Southeastern Liberia roads condition worsen

Rural road to market remains a challenge in Liberia.

The issue of deplorable road condition in southern Liberia is not new to this government and country, but an old age issue for the country. 

 Rainy season seems to be like a season of frustration for the people in southern Liberia counties of Grand Gedeh, River Gee, Sinoe Grand Kru and Maryland. 

Every year, business people in that part of the country find it extremely difficult to get to the country’s capital in purchasing new goods and transporting them back home for business purposes. 

Report gathered by Liberia Public Radio has it that deplorable road condition has stalled normal traveling and business activities in southern Liberia. 

Our correspondent in the region quoted citizens and business people as saying sometimes spend over weeks on the highway with goods and services before reaching their various destinations.

Bad road continues to impede developments

Explaining to LPR recently in Ganta, businesswomen on board to Grand Geddeh, Maryland and Grand Kru spend many days on the highway due to the deposit of huge mud between Gray to Tappita in Nimba County, and other areas alone the road from Tappita to Grand Geddeh. 

“We are suffering with this business we are doing, because of the mud, our goods came get damaged on many occasions because of the bad road”.

The businesswomen explained that they sometimes have to travel across to Ivory Coast to purchase goods. 

As it stand, major commodities price have skyrocketed because of the deplorable road connective in the southern region. 

The businesswomen used the medium and called on the government of Liberia to come to their rescue in finding remedy to the situation. 

“We voted for this government to fix the road so that we can be able to carry our goods freely, but we are not seeing anything and like that”, said Martha Paye.

According to her if nothing is done to remedy the road condition many of them might  soon go out of business.
