Ivorian president goes into confinement after testing positive for COVID-19

The president may miss the Independence Day ceremony on 7 August

Ivorian  President Alassane Outtara has been confined after having been in contact with a person declared positive for Covid-19.

The name of the person was not released.

“The President of the Republic, His Excellency Mr. Alassane OUATTARA, having been in contact with a person who has just been declared positive for Covid 19 has decided following the health recommendations in the matter and in accordance with government provisions to put in confinement,” declares a press statement Tuesday in the Ivorian commercial city, Abidjan.

The press statement quoted President Ouattara as saying “I urge all Ivorians and the population living in Côte d’Ivoire to be vaccinated, while continuing to respect the barrier measures aimed at fighting this pandemic

If the president’s isolation is prolonged he might not take part in the official Independence Day ceremony on 7 August.

The country has recorded about 50,499 confirmed cases with 332 deaths while about 49,553 cases have been recovered, according to the John Hopskin Covid-19 map
