Liberia Bar Association new president officially inducted

Cllr. Sylvester D. Rennie has been sworn in as the 17th President of the Liberia National Bar Association pledging to strengthen the rule of law and independence in Liberia’s legal profession.

At a colorful inaugural induction ceremony Friday, January 25, 2022 at the Ministerial Complex in oldest Congo Town, Cllr. Rennie call upon lawyers to strengthen their resolve to be problem solvers, noting that the goal of the Bar under his administration is providing Justice for everyone.

“Under my administration We stand for a judiciary that is fair, impartial, and independent. We stand for equal treatment of every person by the justice system. We stand for the rule of law in which citizens and government are held to account and where the laws are administered fairly and without regard to privilege. Cllr. Rennie said.”

The LNBA New President also persuade members of the Association to help in revamping the LNBA, with their collective efforts, while also vowing to ensure the construction of a new headquarters of the Liberia National Bar Association.

Cllr. Rennie also reassured members of the LNBA, of corporative policy, cordial relationship, with the Liberian Legislature, Civil Society organizations, and members of the Supreme Court Bench for smooth running of his administration.

Delivering the keynote address, the Head of the Delegation of the European Union, Ambassador Laurent Delahousse, commanded the Liberia National Bar Association for their pivotal role play, in helping to improve the justice system and ensured that Justice is for everyone.

Amb. Delahousse recognized that respect for Human Rights and Democracy are the best principles of government to improve people’s lives and to ensure that no one is left behind.

He said, Democracy and respect of Human Rights are key to fundamental development of a nation and they both go together’ indicating Human Rights are not second to development as their promotion cannot wait for the improvement of people’s lives.

“Those who tell you otherwise are wrong, because ultimately Humans want freedom, respect and a say in their government” Amb. DELAHOUSSE said.

The EU Diploma further noted that many Liberians still lack the financial or practical means to navigate their way through the legal system, but acknowledged the role of the Liberian National Bar Association to make Justice, more accessible to all Liberians, as dictated by the Constitution.

Amb. Delahousse also stressed the important role play by the Liberia National Bar Association (LNBA) in monitoring the integrity, independence and transparency of the legal system in Liberia and praised the LNBA for their contribution towards familiarizing Liberians with the Rule of Law.

Amb. Delahousse pinpointed that Liberia is a vibrant liberal democracy with a long and proud tradition of the respect for – and application of – the Rule of Law of which he said the West African nation (Liberia) and the European Union embrace a common purpose, a common destiny, of developing and nurturing a free society.

Also speaking, Liberia Vice President, Jewel-Howard- Taylor, admonished the new leadership of the Liberia National Bar Association (LNBA), to work and ensured that Justice is serve everywhere, and among every Liberia, regardless of who they are and where they come from while urging the LNBA to work collectively in an effort to fulfill the Lawyer’s Oath.

“You must work for just the laws, human rights, a fair and efficient legal system, and meaningful access to justice for all.” VP Taylor said.

Also speaking in remark, President, African Bar Association, Hannibal Uwaifo, Esq, reminded members of the Bar and those in attendance that the growing insurgencies across West Africa and other areas across the continent is the result of bad governance and failure to adhere to the rule of law”

“I think government and those who run the government are not observing the rule of law; they are not obeying the constitution. The constitution has already provided autonomy for the judiciary but the governors don’t want to obey it, and I think this is harmful to the African Judiciary practice.

Cllr. Uwaifo urged the newly sworn leadership of the Liberia National Bar Association to work hard and ensured that justice is served everywhere in line with their ethics.

The LNBA is the nonprofit, nonpartisan, national bar organization that represents the interests of attorneys, judges, law students and other legal professionals in Liberia.

Others officials were also indicted are Cllr. Jamai C. Dehtho the Vice President, Cllr. Bornor M. Varmah- Secretary, Cllr. B. Rachel Yabah Duibah treasurer.

Executive Council Member includes Cllr. Frederick L. M. Gbeanue, Cllr. Sundaiway Nelson Amegashie, Cllr. F. Juah Lawson, Cllr. Jimmy Saah Bombo and Cllr. Emmanuel Tulay, Atty. Lawrence Tomah, Atty. Emmanuel Tomah, Atty Kunkunyun Wleh Teh and Atty. S. Mohammed Sheriff.
