Liberia Police Director Admits Use of Live Rounds in Kingjor Protest, Urges Public Cooperation in Investigation

Liberia’s Police Inspector General, Gregory Coleman, has acknowledged the use of live rounds by police officers during a tense standoff in the Kingjor protest, resulting in the tragic death of one individual.

 Coleman’s admission came during his first press conference held Saturday, March 2, 2024, where he also disclosed that 23 individuals were arrested in connection with the incident.

The protest, which erupted in Kingjor, in Grand Cape Mount County about 88 kilometers away from the Liberian Capital Monrovia, saw escalating tensions between demonstrators and law enforcement.

According to eyewitnesses, the protest began peacefully but turned violent as clashes erupted between protesters and police officers.

The residents were demanding the withdrawal of armed guards from a mining company, Bea Mountain premises.

Addressing the media, Director Coleman expressed regret over the use of live ammunition by police personnel however, disclosed that several police officers lives were threatened.

 He assured the public that a thorough investigation would be conducted into the circumstances surrounding the use of lethal force.

 Coleman also appealed to the public for cooperation in the ongoing investigation, urging individuals with any information or evidence related to the incident to come forward and assist law enforcement authorities.

Meanwhile, the police IG has disclosed the arrest of 23 individuals in connection with the protest while underscoring the authorities’ determination to maintain law and order.

However, details regarding the charges against the arrested individuals have not been disclosed at this time.
